Children and Adolescents with Emotional Needs
Many children have difficulty verbalizing their current issues, such as a death in the family or divorce, because they are reluctant to self-disclose and are anxious about the therapeutic process. Activities that are creative and music-based can engage resistant children and can help them express their thoughts and feelings. We provide music therapy treatment to help children master key emotional and behavioral competencies such as identifying feelings, coping with emotional difficulties, managing anger, strengthening interpersonal skills, and enhancing self-esteem.
Therapeutic goals for this population may include:
- Identify and verbalize a range of different feelings
- Identify stresses, symptoms, and problem-solving
- Develop listening skills
- Implement adaptive coping techniques
- Express anger through appropriate outlets
- Reduce acting-out behavior
- Identify positive traits about self
- Enhance feelings of uniqueness and self-worth
- Increase communication in family
